Rosie Picks A New Battle

Posted by katespencer on January 18, 2007

Rosie realllllllly ripped into American Idol today, and right in front of Kellie Pickler too!
I hate to say it, but watching the horrible auditions on Idol is my favorite part of the show – well, second only to watching Paula try to function on 79 vicodins and a Coke product.

Major news outlets are picking up on Rosie’s Idol bashing. It raises a good point – that basically the entire country gets off on watching ugly dorks be humiliated. Also Rosie is right about Paula. My dad watching Idol for the first time Tuesday night and he could not stop commenting on Paula’s drugged up antics. She was worse than the singers!

I know this will come as a huge shock to you, Kate, but I also love the early rounds of Idol best. These are people who have CHOSEN to come to an audition and who KNOW what happens on the first 37 episodes of the show. Even if they have never seen the show, these are auditions. If you’re going to show up to any audition, anywhere, get ready to feel like shit. This is why I have not auditioned for anything since high school.

As Simon said on OPRAH (full circle), what you see on TV is a smaller sampling of what actually happens at the auditions. Some people are great, some are terrible, some are just blah.

If you’re going to hate on them for crushing the dreams of weirdos, at least be consistent and hate on the entire show. How is crushing William Hung’s dream in Week 1 so much worse than crushing Ejay Day’s dream in Week 15?

That said, it’s one thing if the contestants are just weird and clueless, another if they seem to be genuinely mentally challenged. I’m speaking specifically about the big fat kid they had on the other night, the one who had become friends with the guy Simon called a “bush baby.” He was not even that bad of a singer, but he was a total Lenny. Guy just wanted to pet the bunnies, if you know what I mean.

    Dear Avril,

Rosie’s problem with the first stages is not that they crush the dreams of the auditioners (real word, don’t look it up, but trust me) but what you were talking about, the mentally challenged ones, or just totally naive ones who are taken advantage of and laughed at. I find it really disgusting to see these grown people acting like they are the Prom Kings and Queen laughing at the nerds. Simon is an ass, but I really hate Paula because she pretends she’s so nice and then is clearly as much of an ass as Simon. At least he’s honest about it.

    Love,
    The Sum of 41
